A graduate in civil engineering and business administration, Ferstl, a native of Seubersdorf, began his career at Max Bögl, where his professional highlights included the construction of the new Leipzig–Nuremberg railway line and underground railway projects in Düsseldorf and Munich. His move to Alfred Kunz Untertagebau (now August Reiners Bauunternehmung) at the end of 2013 paved the way for his professional career; he most recently held the position of authorised signatory and head of the civil engineering division there.
Among his greatest challenges were the highly complex and technically demanding projects as part of the Stuttgart 21 scheme, both in tunnelling and in structural engineering.
Over the past 30 years, Mr Schmidt has held various management positions at Alpine, Strabag, Hochtief and Wiemer und Trachte. At the latter, the Hagen-born executive served as divisional manager for the Rhine rail network and brings with him many years of extensive construction expertise.
