Our major project on the A3 motorway is in the final spurt and, for a project of this size, this means that the construction phase will be completed by the end of next year. In terms of planning, we are 99% complete and will now start realising all outstanding construction measures. We have already reported a lot with facts and figures and would prefer to let the pictures do the talking in this issue.
Planning
Together with the consortium partner, the 71 kilometre stretch between the Biebelried and Fürth/Erlangen motorway junctions is being upgraded. The 5-kilometre stretch between Fuchsberg and east of the Geiselwind junction was conventionally widened to six lanes back in 2018.
Eiffage-Infra-Bau is responsible for the technical management of the construction of the A3 motorway, which means that the EIB represents the construction consortium vis-à-vis the client - in consultation with the consortium partner as commercial management. The EIB is also responsible, among other things, for monitoring the construction work, obtaining building permits and concluding subcontractor agreements.
The start
The go-ahead was given in May 2020 and a lot has already happened in the various trades since then. Construction operations, including all the necessary infrastructure (three construction offices, IT, accommodation, etc.), have been set up and the construction ARGE now employs over 200 industrial workers, 150 salaried employees and more than 100 external staff.
The progress
Public traffic will be routed past the future construction area in a so-called 4+0 traffic routing (redirection of traffic from two lanes to one lane in the area of a construction site). Outside the existing motorway body, earthworks have already been carried out for the final six-lane extension.
A total of 91 engineering structures are being built:
- 4 large bridges
- 22 single-span overpasses in steel-concrete composite construction
- 67 subways Irritation and noise barriers as well as retaining wall structures
Around 2.1 million tonnes of asphalt are moved in the road construction and civil engineering sector, up to 9,000 tonnes per day. The Eiffage team is responsible for the construction of all road equipment such as road markings and signage. The project also includes the construction of drainage, natural and landscaping works as well as the operational facilities.
Operation and maintenance of the entire 76-kilometre stretch for a total of 30 years until 2050 are also part of the contract. This means that the consortium will be responsible for winter maintenance, green maintenance, repairs to the route and the elimination of accident damage so that the route can be used safely and comfortably by all road users.
