Whilst the concreting of the pile cap had to be rescheduled for the early hours of the morning in calendar week 26 due to the sweltering heat, work on our Zell viaduct has proceeded at a much more moderate pace over the last two weeks. Of course, this only applies to the temperatures, as our construction site is running at high speed – or rather, at the much-cited, unbridled Odenwald pace💪.
The former Zell Bridge, which had to be demolished in July 2025 due to longitudinal cracks in the concrete, was largely founded on shallow foundations. To give the new valley bridge even greater stability, it is being built on deep foundations consisting of bored piles up to 15 metres long and 1.20 metres in diameter.
On the other side of the valley, the formwork for the pairs of piers that will support the 120-metre-long viaduct is already visible. By the time it is completed in summer 2027, around 4,500 m³ of concrete will have been used here, requiring approximately 5,000 lorry loads🚛.
The Odenwald Railway, whose route runs through the valley, will remain closed until the end of the Hessian summer holidays so that work can continue unhindered.
Wewish our project team continued success and an accident-free construction period🍀. And we look forward to many more milestones, whether in the height of summer, a stormy autumn or a freezing winter🌞🍂❄️.
