Green pathways for the future. Eiffage Infra-Nordwest is building cycle path bridges for the IGA Metropole Ruhr 2027.
The International Garden Exhibition Metropole Ruhr 2027 (IGA 2027) is already making its presence felt. This major horticultural festival will link several exhibition sites via a sustainable cycle path network – and our civil engineering team at Eiffage Infra-Nordwest is actively involved in this. In Lünen, two new cycle bridges are being built as part of this project, linking the south of the city directly to the city centre and creating sustainable added value for local residents. The bridges form part of the IGA cycle route, which will soon link various ‘gardens of the future’ across the Ruhr region. The vision: environmentally friendly, modern and attractive mobility – right through the Lippe floodplains.
An impressive bridge construction project
Particularly noteworthy is the bridge structure over the River Lippe, which was slid across the river in sections using a complex procedure. Spanning 97 metres, the bridge was constructed in six sections and has now been successfully slid onto the opposite bank. The abutments were previously founded deep on micropiles; the necessary earthworks for the reinforced concrete structures have been completed; and the final steel components were finished at the ARGE partner’s factory.
The second cycle path bridge spans Kamener Straße – another highlight of the project. In May, the 42-metre-long, 60-tonne structure was successfully hoisted into place. With a span of 33 metres, the gently curved steel structure floats elegantly over the road and blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
Elegant design meets engineering excellence
Both bridges are real eye-catchers: the design is the work of a Paris-based team of architects who, in collaboration with an engineering firm from Hanover, developed a concept that is both functionally and visually impressive. The guiding principle:
The route should blend naturally into the surroundings whilst providing an attractive, safe and environmentally friendly crossing for cyclists and pedestrians. In particular, the single-sided support structure of the Lippe Bridge ensures that visitors can enjoy a good view of the International Garden Exhibition from a distance – a real highlight as they enter the IGA site.
A sustainable project for Lünen and the region
The bridges are not only technical masterpieces but also a significant contribution to sustainable urban development. They create direct links, promote cycling and walking, and make an important contribution to the IGA 2027’s environmentally friendly transport concept.
