What does a road builder do?
As a road builder, you play a key role in the construction of transport routes. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to survey roads, paths and squares, prepare the sub-base and carry out earthworks. You will, for example, work with excavators, rollers, milling machines and other construction machinery, and ensure that the sub-base is laid and compacted to the required standard. In this way, you help to ensure that traffic areas are safe and durable.
In this profession, you will carry out many practical tasks in road and transport infrastructure construction. These include, amongst other things:
- Building all kinds of transport routes, e.g. roads, paths, squares and cycle paths
- Surveying areas, determining elevations and gradients
- Preparing the sub-base, carrying out earthworks, levelling and compacting
- Laying gravel and base courses, and laying asphalt surfacing
- operating construction machinery, e.g. milling machines, rollers, excavators and graders
- Installing kerbs, kerb stones and drainage systems
- Carrying out repair and maintenance work on existing roads
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental and health protection requirements
Road builders mainly work:
- in road construction and civil engineering firms
- on construction sites for roads, paths, squares and traffic areas
- on new-build, extension and conversion projects, as well as on refurbishment works
- often at different outdoor construction sites
The work is physically demanding, highly practical and takes place mainly outdoors.

- physical stamina
- Enjoyment of working outdoors in various locations
- a practical approach and the ability to work as part of a team
