What does a pipework fitter specialising in infrastructure engineering do?
As a pipework fitter, you ensure that water, gas and other media flow safely through pipework networks. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to lay, connect and inspect pipework, as well as how to prepare trenches and work sites professionally. You will work with various pipe materials and construction equipment, helping to ensure that supply pipes operate safely and reliably.
In this role, you will carry out a wide range of practical tasks in the fields of pipeline and civil engineering. These include, amongst other things:
- Laying pipes for water, gas, district heating or other media
- Digging, securing and backfilling trenches
- Cutting, joining, welding and sealing pipes
- Installing service connections and connecting pipes to supply networks
- Carrying out pressure tests and leak tests
- Working with construction machinery, e.g. excavators, compaction equipment, and pipe-working tools
- Reading pipework diagrams, working to technical specifications
- Securing work sites; ensuring health and safety at work, environmental protection and health protection
Pipeline fitters mainly work:
- for civil engineering and pipeline construction firms
- in the construction and refurbishment of utility networks for water, gas and district heating
- on construction sites on roads, in residential areas and on industrial sites
- mainly outdoors on various construction sites
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate
- An interest in technology and utility systems
- Physical stamina and a keen interest in hands-on work
- A meticulous approach to work and the ability to work as part of a team
- Willingness to work at different locations
