What does an industrial mechanic do?
As an industrial mechanic, you ensure that machinery and production lines run reliably. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to manufacture, assemble and inspect mechanical components, as well as how to maintain equipment and troubleshoot faults. You’ll work with modern manufacturing techniques and measure, test and adjust components to ensure that production runs smoothly.
In this role, you will carry out a wide range of practical and technical tasks on machinery and plant. These include, amongst other things:
- setting up, operating and monitoring machinery and production equipment
- manufacturing, assembling and testing mechanical components and assemblies
- Identifying faults, investigating their causes and rectifying them
- Carrying out maintenance and repair work
- Using measuring and testing equipment, checking tolerances
- Reading technical drawings and planning work steps
- Collaborate with other specialist departments, e.g. electronics or production
Industrial mechanics mainly work:
- in industrial and manufacturing plants
- in workshops, production halls and maintenance departments
- in mechanical and plant engineering
in the servicing and installation of plant at customers’ premises
You’ll be working closely with the technology, often directly on the machinery, and using your expertise to ensure that production runs safely and efficiently.
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate
- An interest in maths, physics and technology
- Ability to adapt to different tasks and conditions
- A precise, structured and responsible approach to work
- Ability to work as part of a team and communicate openly
