What does an industrial electrician do?
As an industrial electrician, you ensure that electrical installations and systems operate reliably. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to work with, assemble and connect electrical components, read circuit diagrams and systematically troubleshoot faults. You’ll commission systems, monitor their operation and help to ensure that wherever electricity flows, everything runs safely and without disruption.
In this role, you will carry out a wide range of technical and practical tasks relating to electrical installations. These include, amongst other things:
- installing, connecting and wiring electrical components and equipment
- reading and implementing circuit diagrams and technical documentation
- Testing and measuring systems, systematically troubleshooting and rectifying faults
- commissioning and monitoring electrical installations
- carrying out maintenance, repair and servicing work
- Comply with safety regulations; use measuring instruments and test equipment
- Work as part of a team with other electrical engineering specialists
Industrial electricians mainly work:
- in industrial and manufacturing plants
- in electrical installation and automation technology firms
- in workshops, production halls and at machine and plant sites
- in the servicing and maintenance of electrical systems
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent
- an interest in technical matters and the ability to concentrate
- a precise and conscientious approach to work
- Ability to work well in a team and strong communication skills
- quick on the uptake
