What does a bricklayer do?

As a bricklayer, you construct the structural framework for residential and commercial buildings and ensure that the buildings have a safe foundation. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to prepare building sites, pour concrete foundations, and build or concrete walls and ceilings. You’ll work with precast elements, formwork systems and steel reinforcement, mix concrete or work with ready-mixed concrete, and also carry out demolition and conversion work. When carrying out repair and refurbishment work, you’ll identify structural damage, determine its causes and rectify it.

Information on training

In this role, you’ll carry out a wide range of practical and hands-on tasks on the building site. These include, amongst other things:

  • Erecting the structural framework for residential and commercial buildings
  • Laying concrete foundations, and building or casting walls and ceilings
  • Assembling prefabricated components, constructing and installing formwork systems
  • Fabricating and installing reinforcement from reinforcing steel
  • Mixing concrete or working with ready-mixed concrete
  • Carrying out demolition and renovation work
  • Identifying structural damage, determining its causes, and repairing the damage
  • Work to plans and technical drawings

Bricklayers mainly work:

  • on building sites involved in the construction of residential, office and commercial buildings
  • on new-build, conversion and refurbishment projects
  • in construction companies specialising in building construction and civil engineering
  • as part of a team with concrete and reinforced concrete workers, structural construction specialists and other trades

The work is mainly carried out outdoors and on various building sites.

  • at least a secondary school leaving certificate
  • good coordination and no fear of heights
  • Adept at working in all weathers and enjoy working outdoors
  • strong manual dexterity
  • Enjoyment of practical teamwork
