At 107 metres, the Müngsten Bridge near Solingen is the highest railway bridge in Germany. It carries the Wuppertal-Solingen line in the Wupper river valley. The steel arch bridge, which dates back to 1897, needs to be completely refurbished due to severe corrosion, which DB Netz AG estimates will cost 30 million euros. One third of this contract was awarded to the Group's sister company Eiffel Deutschland Stahltechnologie, which in turn engaged Eiffage Rail for the track construction part.
The western branch will be replacing the double-track carriageway structure from April 2013 to October 2014. It is dismantling the rails, sleepers and fastenings along the entire length and replacing them with the latest generation of steel bridge sleepers. In addition, four rail pull-out devices on the bridge and four on the landside abutments will be replaced.
