Due to the clearance of a Deutsche Bahn bridge, the district heating connection to the power plant in Sandreuth had to be laid trenchlessly under an important railway line. The district heating culvert was constructed using jacking pipes with an internal diameter of 3.0 metres and an external diameter of 3.6 metres. These large pipe dimensions made the project a special one, despite its short length of 100 metres, as the pipe size presented the tunnelling team with logistical challenges. Both the tunnelling machine, with its enormous size and weight, and the pipes had to be driven into densely populated Nuremberg at night.
