Our Building Construction and Civil Engineering department was commissioned by the federal motorway company Autobahn GmbH with the replacement construction of the A6 Frankenthal motorway with a contract volume of 7.2 million euros.

The existing structure 6416 707 is a single-span girder with a length of approx. 17.2 metres made of reinforced concrete using the plate girder method. The structure, built in 1938, consists of two identical substructures (one substructure for each directional carriageway), which are separated from each other by a space joint.

As part of the project, a new replacement structure will be built in the same location using prestressed concrete. Substructure 2 on the south side will be demolished and rebuilt in the 1st construction phase. To enable the closure, a temporary bridge will be erected to widen the lane on the north side, which will carry traffic. Once the carriageway has been relocated, the central reservation will be closed for the driving of a soldier pile shoring.

To protect this shoring, the abutments and the connected bunkers from 1938 will be exposed on substructure 2 in preparation for demolition work at the beginning of September 2025. Substructure 2 will then be rebuilt with recessed abutments and a prestressed concrete superstructure. In the course of this, the L523 will be widened.

Once traffic has been shifted to the new substructure 2, the existing TBW 1 will be closed, exposed and demolished in the same process. After completion of TBW 1, the abutments will be given a new sandstone façade, analogous to the construction method used in 1938.

Completion of the work is planned for February 2027.
