Repair work on the Weiberswoog bridge

As part of the repair works on the Weiberswoog Bridge near Idar-Oberstein, the existing transition structure, comprising six sealing profiles, was removed using high-pressure water jets and replaced with a new, noise-reduced transition structure comprising five sealing profiles. In order to securely anchor the new transition structure, the gap in the structure had to be reduced by 150 mm.

The replacement of the transition structure was initially planned to be carried out in three sections with welded joints on site. To optimise the construction schedule and improve quality, the transition structure was installed on site in one piece, without any welded joints. This was made possible by the use of modular crossing plates, which were laid across the gap left by the removed transition structure to maintain traffic flow during the construction phases. The installation of the transition structure took place during a one-day full closure. During the full closure, the crossing plates were folded open, the transition structure was hoisted into place, aligned and secured. The crossing plates were then folded shut and traffic was able to resume unhindered.

Due to the poor condition of the kerb, instead of the planned edge seal using liquid plastic, the kerb was replaced along the entire length of the structure in both directions of travel.

The asbestos-containing waterproofing beneath the old road surface was removed using our own low-emission demolition method, packed up and subsequently disposed of at an authorised waste disposal site.

Once the contaminated area had been cleaned, a new waterproofing layer was installed across the entire bridge deck using an epoxy resin sealant and bituminous membrane.

As part of the repair works, the bridge drain uppers were also replaced, the lower sections were treated with an anti-corrosion system, and a new road surface was laid.

This included the following works:

  • Installation of a new 16 m transition structure
  • 16 m reduction in the gap between the bridge structures
  • 26 m² of modular crossing plates
  • 4,380 m² of removal and disposal of asbestos-containing waterproofing
  • 4,380 m² of waterproofing replacement
  • 680 m replacement of kerb strips in accordance with RiZ ING Dicht 20
  • 2,070 composite anchors
  • 4,300 m² of asphalt works
  • 20 bridge drains replaced
  • 2,530 m bituminous joint sealing
  • 700 m polyurethane joint sealing
  • 1,750 m of road marking works
