As part of the repair contract for the Weiberswoog bridge near Idar-Oberstein, the existing transition structure with 6 sealing profiles was removed using high-pressure water jets and replaced with a new, noise-reduced transition structure with 5 sealing profiles. In order to be able to anchor the new transition structure securely, the structural gap had to be reduced by 150 mm.
The replacement of the transition structure was initially planned in 3 sections with welded joints on the measure. To optimise construction time and increase quality, the transition structure was installed on site in one piece, without a welded joint. This was made possible by the use of modular overrun plates, which were placed over the gap of the dismantled expansion joint structure in order to maintain traffic during the construction phases. The transition structure was installed during a one-day full road closure. During the full closure, the overrun plates were unfolded and the transition structure was lifted into place, aligned and fixed. The ramp plates were then closed and traffic was able to continue unhindered.
Due to the poor condition of the scraper kerb, instead of the planned edge connection with liquid plastic, a set of scraper kerbs was installed along the entire length of the structure in both directions of travel.
The asbestos-containing seal under the old road surface was removed using our own low-emission demolition process, packaged and then deposited at an authorised disposal site.
Once the contaminated area had been cleaned, a new seal was applied to the entire bridge deck using epoxy resin sealant and bitumen sheeting.
As part of the repair work, the upper bridge drainage sections were also renewed, the lower sections were provided with a corrosion protection system and a new carriageway surface was constructed.
