The project is being carried out as part of the Lübeck–Hamburg comprehensive refurbishment. Due to the planned five-month total closure of the Lübeck–Hamburg line, traffic is to be diverted via line 1121 between Lübeck and Büchen.
In order to accommodate this traffic, line 1121 – as the diversion route – must first be optimised due to the high presence of peat. To this end, sections of the railway embankment are to be reinforced using the FMI method and the entire superstructure, including the PSS, is to be renewed.
The works to be carried out on the single-track line extend between Mölln and Güster from km 29.903 to km 37.800 and are divided into 15 lots or two construction phases.
The embankment reinforcement using the FMI method will be carried out in four sub-sections with a total length of 3.25 km. The renewal of the superstructure, including the PSS and cable routing system, covers a total length of almost 8 km. The superstructure renewal will be carried out section by section, either conventionally or by machine.
The contract comprises the following key construction works:
- 114,000 m³ of embankment reinforcement using the FMI method
- 2,267 m of track renewal using the continuous track renewal method with RPM
- 2,267 m of ballast cleaning carried out mechanically using RPM
- 5,640 m complete ballast removal by machine
- 5,640 m of track removal / 5,640 m of track laying using conventional methods
- 8,000 m of underground cable works
- Drainage works
- Construction of new points connection
- Level crossing works at four level crossings
The main works will take place during two closure periods from October to December 2026 and February to May 2027, during which the line will be completely closed.
The project will run for around 15 months from September 2026 to December 2027 and will be carried out in collaboration with our sister company Eiffage Infra-Rail, as well as the firms Matthäi Trimodalbau, Sidla & Schönberger Spezialtiefbau and Schönberger Bau.
We are looking forward to this exciting project.
