The Conneforde–Cloppenburg–Merzen project is a sustainability initiative by TenneT aimed at transmitting green wind power from the North Sea inland via high-voltage overhead lines and underground cables.
Our team at Infra-Spezialtiefbau is currently working in Conneforde, where we have been commissioned to carry out bored pile foundations for overhead line pylons. Up to eight inclined piles, with an inclination of up to 8°, are being installed at each pylon site. The diameters of the piles range from 1.0 metres to 1.5 metres! The challenges posed by this construction project include not only the inclined piles, but also the logistics and working in confined spaces. The logistics behind the project are one of the most demanding aspects, as the team often has to complete the foundations for one pole site within a week and then move on to the next construction site.
With two drilling rigs, this can require up to four relocations per week, with each drilling rig having to be moved via poorly maintained and narrow farm tracks using a heavy-haul vehicle approximately 29 metres long. The site equipment is then transported separately by lorries. Depending on the diameter and depth of the piles to be drilled, this can involve up to 12 lorries per move.
For this contract, Infra-Spezialtiefbau is working closely with our Eiffage Infra-West team, as the team is responsible not only for the bored pile work but also for the excavation pits, concrete foundation work, steel fabrication and groundwater control, including its subsequent treatment.
One of the biggest challenges is reconciling the preliminary work carried out by our client with the coordination of our subcontractors, as the work processes must run hand in hand here to keep the construction site running smoothly; but it is only by working together that we can achieve great things and, in the truest sense of the word, ‘aim high’!
