Our major project on the A3 is in its final stages, and for a project of this scale, that means the construction phase will be completed by the end of next year. We are 99 per cent finished with the planning and will now move forward with all the remaining construction work. We’ve already reported extensively on the facts and figures, so in this issue we’d prefer to let the pictures speak for themselves.

Planning

Together with our consortium partner, we are upgrading the 71-kilometre stretch between the Biebelried and Fürth/Erlangen motorway junctions. The 5-kilometre section between Fuchsberg and east of the Geiselwind junction was already upgraded to six lanes using conventional methods back in 2018.

Eiffage-Infra-Bau is responsible for technical management of the A3 construction project. This means that EIB represents the construction consortium vis-à-vis the client – in consultation with the consortium partner, who acts as commercial manager. In addition, EIB is responsible, amongst other things, for supervising the construction work, obtaining planning permission and concluding subcontractor agreements.

The start

Work began in May 2020, and since then, significant progress has already been made across the various trades. The construction site, including all the necessary infrastructure (three site offices, IT, accommodation, etc.), has been set up, and the construction consortium now employs over 200 tradespeople, 150 office staff and more than 100 external staff.

Progress

Public transport is being diverted past the future construction site via a so-called 4+0 traffic management scheme (shifting traffic from two lanes to a single lane in each direction within the construction zone). Outside the existing motorway structure, earthworks for the final six-lane expansion have already been carried out.

A total of 91 engineering structures are being built:

  • 4 large bridges
  • 22 single-span overpasses in composite steel-concrete construction
  • 67 underpasses, noise barriers and retaining wall structures

In the road and civil engineering sector, around 2.1 million tonnes of asphalt are being moved, at a rate of up to 9,000 tonnes per day. The Eiffage team is responsible here for installing all road infrastructure, such as road markings and signage. The project also includes the construction of drainage systems, nature and landscaping works, and operational facilities.

The contract also includes the operation and maintenance of the entire 76-kilometre stretch for a total of 30 years, until 2050. This means that the consortium will be responsible for winter maintenance, grounds maintenance, repairs to the route and the repair of accident damage, ensuring that the route can be used safely and comfortably by all road users.
