What does a track layer do?
As a track fitter, you literally set the right course for rail transport. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to construct, maintain and repair track systems and level crossings. You’ll install, repair and inspect the tracks, lay rails, adjust track sections and weld them together. In this way, you’ll ensure that trains run safely and reliably – making an important contribution to modern, climate-friendly mobility.
In this role, you will carry out a wide range of practical tasks relating to the development and maintenance of the rail network. These include, amongst other things:
- Building and maintaining track systems
- Laying, adjusting and welding rails
- Constructing and maintaining level crossings
- Constructing track beds and sub-bases, laying and compacting ballast
- Checking, measuring and correcting track alignment
- Checking and documenting the operational safety of track systems
- Carrying out repairs; rectifying faults and damage to tracks
- Operate specialist machinery, e.g. tamping and ballast machines
Track fitters mainly work:
- for rail transport and track-laying companies
- on construction sites involved in the construction and refurbishment of railway lines
- on maintenance and refurbishment work on existing track systems
- at level crossings, points, stops and stations
The work is mainly carried out outdoors, often in shifts and at varying locations along the railway lines.

- High physical stamina
- A passion for precise planning and exact timing
- A willingness to get stuck in and help out as part of a team
