Training as a surveying technician

What does a surveying technician do?

As a surveying technician, you ensure that construction projects and areas are surveyed with the utmost precision. During your training, you will learn how to carry out positional and elevation measurements in the field, record survey data and represent it in plans and 3D models. You’ll work with modern surveying equipment, including drones in some cases, and help to plan and cost construction projects with precision.

Information on vocational training

In this role, you’ll carry out a wide range of practical and technical tasks both indoors and outdoors. These include, amongst other things:

  • Carrying out position and elevation measurements in the field
  • Setting up, operating and maintaining measuring equipment and surveying instruments
  • Recording, checking and analysing measurement data
  • Creating and updating plans, maps and 3D models on a computer
  • Calculating areas and volumes, and preparing data for invoicing and planning
  • Working with digital surveying systems, GPS and, where appropriate, drones
  • Working as part of a team with engineers, site managers and planning offices

Surveying technicians mainly work:

  • in surveying firms, engineering and planning firms
  • in construction companies and public sector organisations
  • in the field on building sites and in the countryside, as well as in the office for data processing

You’ll be out in the field as well as in the office working on a computer, and your accurate data will ensure that construction projects can be planned, carried out and invoiced safely.

  • at least a secondary school leaving certificate or a vocational baccalaureate
  • Confidence with numbers and an eye for detail
  • spatial awareness and an interest in technology
  • Manual dexterity and a enjoyment of working outdoors
  • An interest in alternating between office and site work
