What does a canal builder specialising in infrastructure engineering do?
As a sewer construction worker, you ensure that our towns and cities stay dry and that wastewater is safely drained away. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to lay pipes made from various materials, carry out surveying work and operate construction machinery such as excavators and wheel loaders. You will excavate manholes and trenches, line them with waterproofing, and maintain the pipe systems to ensure that no wastewater enters the groundwater.
In this role, you will carry out a wide range of practical tasks in civil engineering and utility installation. These include, amongst other things:
- Laying concrete, plastic and metal pipes
- Excavating, securing and backfilling shafts and trenches
- Operating construction machinery, e.g. excavators, wheel loaders and compaction equipment
- Carrying out surveying work, determining elevations and gradients
- Sealing, inspecting and maintaining pipework systems
- Renovating and repairing sewer pipes and sewers
- Setting up and securing construction sites, ensuring order and safety
- Work in accordance with plans and technical specifications
Sewer construction workers mainly work:
- in civil engineering and sewer construction for construction companies
- on construction sites for sewage and drainage systems
- on the construction, extension and renovation of sewers and pipe networks
- mainly outdoors on various building sites
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent
- Enjoy working outdoors
- Strength and physical fitness
- A meticulous, detail-oriented approach to work
- A practical aptitude and the ability to work as part of a team
