What does a road builder do in railway construction?
As a railway construction worker, you play a key role in the construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to prepare the sub-base for tracks, lay ballast and install drainage systems. You’ll work with construction machinery such as excavators and rollers, and ensure that track systems are stable and safe so that trains can run reliably.
In this role, you’ll carry out a wide range of practical tasks relating to the construction of railway infrastructure. These include, amongst other things:
- preparing, levelling and compacting the sub-base for tracks
- laying ballast and sub-bases
- manufacturing, installing and maintaining drainage systems
- carrying out earthworks and securing excavation pits and work areas
- operating construction machinery, e.g. excavators, rollers and milling machines
- Carry out repair and maintenance work on existing railway infrastructure
- Work in accordance with plans and survey data
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental and health protection requirements
Road builders working in railway construction are primarily employed by:
- for companies specialising in railway and track construction
- on construction sites for railway stations, railway lines and level crossings
- on new-build and refurbishment projects for track systems
- on various outdoor construction sites, often along railway lines
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate
- a meticulous and precise approach to work
- An interest in technology and working outdoors
- the ability to cope with physical demands and a passion for hands-on teamwork
