Training as a professional driver

What does a professional driver do?

As a professional driver, you play a key role in our logistics operations. During your training, you will learn how to transport a variety of goods safely by lorry – for example, industrial products, building materials, timber or consumer goods. You’ll be familiar with road traffic regulations both at home and abroad, carry out pre-departure and post-delivery checks on the vehicle, and ensure that the vehicle, its load and all documentation are in perfect condition at all times.

Information on training

In this role, you will take on many responsibilities relating to the transport of goods. These include, amongst other things:

  • safely transporting various goods and materials by lorry
  • taking charge of the vehicle, checking it and preparing it for the journey
  • securing the load correctly and ensuring an even weight distribution
  • Planning itineraries and routes based on guidelines and traffic conditions
  • Loading and unloading goods at various locations
  • Check and carry delivery notes and transport documents
  • Monitor the vehicle’s technical condition and carry out minor maintenance and servicing tasks
  • Observe traffic and safety regulations and drive defensively

Professional drivers mainly work:

  • for haulage and logistics companies
  • in the construction industry, transporting building materials and construction machinery
  • in companies with their own vehicle fleets and for in-house transport
  • on regional, national and, in some cases, international routes
  • in close contact with customers, dispatchers and colleagues from the warehouse and construction sites

A large part of the work takes place on the road; you’ll spend a lot of time outdoors and working at a wide variety of sites.

  • you have at least a secondary school leaving certificate or intermediate school leaving certificate
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Enjoy driving large vehicles
  • Technical understanding
  • A responsible and focused approach to work
  • Enjoy being on the road and working at different locations
