What does an HVAC and plumbing engineer do?

As a HVAC&S plant mechanic, you ensure that heating, air-conditioning, ventilation and plumbing systems operate reliably and efficiently. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to design, install, commission and maintain such systems. You will install modern systems, inspect and test them regularly, and be responsible for identifying and rectifying faults – from the bathroom right through to the building’s main heating system.

Information on training

In this role, you will carry out a wide range of practical, technical and hands-on tasks. These include, amongst others:

  • Assembling and installing heating, air-conditioning, ventilation and plumbing systems
  • working to workshop plans, technical drawings and specifications
  • Laying, connecting and testing pipes for leaks
  • Fitting fittings, radiators, ventilation components and sanitary ware
  • Adjusting, commissioning and testing the functionality of systems
  • Carry out maintenance and repair work
  • Troubleshoot faults, diagnose problems and rectify them
  • Advising customers on the correct use and maintenance of systems
  • Assist with the installation of systems for the use of renewable energy (e.g. heat pumps, solar thermal systems)

HVAC and plumbing technicians mainly work:

  • in specialist engineering firms specialising in heating, air-conditioning and plumbing
  • at installation and maintenance firms specialising in building services
  • on construction sites for new-build and refurbishment projects
  • in residential and commercial buildings, public buildings and industrial facilities
  • in direct contact with customers, architects and other trades

You’ll be working in workshops as well as on various construction sites and attending client appointments.

  • at least a secondary school or secondary level qualification
  • manual dexterity and attention to detail
  • An interest in technology, energy systems and building services engineering
  • Enjoyment of practical work and getting stuck in
  • Openness and a friendly manner
  • Willingness to work at different locations and on site at clients’ premises
