What does a construction machine operator do?
As a construction machinery operator, you are a key member of the team on the building site. During your training, you will learn how to operate various types of construction equipment and machinery, prepare them for use, and thus support earthworks and the processing of building materials. For example, you’ll work with excavators, cranes, bulldozers, rollers and other machinery, ensuring that they are safe and ready for use.
In this role, you’ll take on a range of practical and technical tasks on the building site. These include, amongst other things:
- operating modern construction equipment and machinery
- preparing machinery for use
- transporting equipment to the building site
- carrying out earthworks
- processing and working with building materials
- Maintain machinery and ensure it is in good working order
- Contribute to the safe and smooth running of the construction site
Construction machinery operators mainly work:
- on building sites involved in building construction, road construction and civil engineering
- on earthworks and civil engineering projects
- in the field of transport infrastructure construction
- on major infrastructure projects
- in teams with other trades on various construction sites
The work often takes place outdoors and is very hands-on.
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate
- a keen interest in technology and construction machinery
- Enjoyment of hands-on work on the building site
