What does a concrete and steel fabricator do?

As a concrete and reinforced concrete builder, you ensure that concrete structures are stable, durable and safe. During your apprenticeship, you will learn how to produce concrete in various mix proportions and how to construct components from concrete and reinforced concrete. You will erect formwork and scaffolding, install steel reinforcement, pour fresh concrete into the formwork, compact it and, once it has set, finish the concrete surfaces. You will also be responsible for the waterproofing, insulation and refurbishment of concrete elements.

Information on training

In this role, you will carry out a wide range of practical and technically demanding tasks on the building site. These include, amongst other things:

  • Constructing concrete and reinforced concrete structures
  • Assembling, erecting and dismantling formwork and scaffolding
  • Bending, weaving and installing steel reinforcement
  • Mixing concrete, pouring it into formwork and compacting it
  • Finishing concrete surfaces, e.g. smoothing, texturing or curing
  • Waterproofing, insulating and thermally insulating concrete components
  • Identifying, repairing and refurbishing damage to concrete components
  • Working to plans and technical drawings

Concrete and reinforced concrete workers mainly work:

  • on building sites in the fields of building construction, civil engineering and bridge construction
  • on the construction of industrial halls, high-rise buildings, and residential and commercial buildings
  • in companies specialising in concrete and reinforced concrete construction
  • on new-build projects, conversions and refurbishments
  • as part of a team with building construction workers, bricklayers, plant operators and other trades

The work is mainly carried out outdoors and on various construction sites, and is physically demanding and highly practical.

  • at least a secondary school leaving certificate
  • manual dexterity and the ability to work as part of a team
  • An interest in technical drawings and construction processes
  • a keen sense of precision and timing
  • Physical stamina and a enjoyment of hands-on work
