Training as a civil engineering technician

What does a civil engineering technician do?

As a civil engineering technician, you’ll be working where things go deep underground – for example, on the construction of pipelines, roads or specialised civil engineering projects. During your apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to carry out earthworks, excavate building pits and trenches, and construct transport routes as well as utility and waste disposal systems. Depending on your specialism, you might work in road construction, track laying, sewer construction or specialised civil engineering, ensuring that everything is carried out safely and to a professional standard.

Information on training

In this role, you’ll carry out a wide range of practical tasks in civil engineering and road construction. These include, amongst other things:

  • carrying out earthworks, excavating building pits and trenches
  • Constructing traffic areas, building roads, paths and squares
  • Laying, inspecting and backfilling pipes and sewers
  • Installing kerbing, paving surfaces and kerbstones
  • Securing excavation pits, installing drainage ditches and systems
  • Processing various building materials such as concrete, asphalt, plastics or metal
  • Working to plans and survey data
  • Operating machinery and equipment, e.g. excavators, compaction equipment or construction machinery

Civil engineering specialists work primarily in:

  • in road and track construction
  • in sewer and pipeline construction
  • on railway track and specialist civil engineering projects
  • on construction sites for infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, utility networks and waste disposal systems
  • in construction companies and specialist firms specialising in civil engineering and road construction

The work is mainly carried out outdoors, often involving heavy machinery and at various construction sites.

  • at least a secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent
  • An interest in physical work outdoors
  • Commitment and a sense of responsibility
  • Enjoyment of practical teamwork
