What does a building construction worker do?
As a building construction technician, you’ll be working directly on the building site, ensuring that buildings and structures are constructed safely and securely. During your apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to prepare surfaces, take measurements, erect formwork, and pour and compact concrete to the required standard. You’ll work on walls, ceilings, columns, bridges or service areas, for example, and you’ll be a key part of the building construction team.
In this role, you’ll carry out a range of practical tasks on the building site. These include, amongst other things:
- Preparing sites and setting up construction sites
- Building concrete and reinforced concrete structures, e.g. walls, floors, columns or bridges
- Fabricating, erecting and dismantling formwork and scaffolding
- Mixing, placing and properly compacting concrete
- Erecting walls and other structural elements in building construction
- Taking measurements and working to plans
- Preparing building materials and assisting with their transport
- Ensure safety, order and cleanliness on the building site
Skilled building construction workers mainly work:
- on building sites in the building and civil engineering sectors
- on the construction of residential and commercial buildings as well as public buildings
- on bridges, halls, utility rooms and other structures made of concrete and reinforced concrete
- in construction companies and specialist building contractors
- as part of a team with bricklayers, concrete and reinforced concrete workers, construction machinery operators and other trades
The work is mainly carried out outdoors and is very physically demanding and hands-on.
- at least a secondary school leaving certificate
- good coordination and a head for heights
- Enjoyment of physical, hands-on work
- An interest in working on a building site
- Reliability and the ability to work as part of a team
