Land recycling on the former Ruhr Zink site in Datteln.

Around 200,000 tonnes of material, including around 120,000 tonnes of concrete and reinforced concrete, were moved from the 14.5 hectare site of the former zinc smelter on Wittener Strasse. A large proportion of this was processed and recycled for the construction of a planned commercial area. Parallel to the demolition work, work was carried out on the construction of the sealing wall.

  • Deconstruction of traffic areas (factory roads, parking and storage areas)
  • Foundation demolition (floor slabs, column foundations, basement walls, etc.)
  • Perforation of reinforced concrete floor slabs
  • Demolition of old facilities
  • Dismantling drainage channels (> DN 200)
  • Damming drainage channels (low-lying channels > DN 200)
  • Excavation of backfill, soil (contaminated and uncontaminated)
  • Material placement (backfill, processed RCL I/II construction waste,
    soil, contaminated and uncontaminated)
  • Construction waste processing and profiling work
  • Explosive ordnance detection (suspected sites on instruction and under supervision of KBD)
  • Disposal services incl. chemical analysis

Remaining areas
In January 2017, Heinrich Walter Bau began to work through other areas that had not yet been processed, such as the area around the buildings in the south, including car parks, as well as other areas of the former company premises, mostly on the periphery, in some cases to a depth of 1.50 m of the current surface. Existing buildings and facilities were dismantled. Obstacles such as foundations and drainage channels were removed and contaminated materials professionally disposed of so that the site could then be professionally rebuilt.

Dismantling the ore concentrate storage hall
HWB was awarded another contract for the dismantling work on the ore concentrate storage hall. The hall was dismantled by December 2017, including the de-foundation, disposal and processing of the footprint.

In future, the site is to be used for commercial purposes with construction, transport and green spaces - the Meckinghoven industrial park.

Development of Meckinghoven business park
Since January 2018, HWB has been carrying out the development work on the site of the future Meckinghoven business park as part of a joint venture.
