In September 2017, work began on the expansion of the ageing depot of Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe in Trachenberge. The depot is used by DVB to park trams and buses during off-peak times (nights and weekends) and to clean and repair them. Some of the existing infrastructure dated back to the 1960s and had only ever been repaired locally in the past. Accordingly, extensive renovation measures were now necessary to keep the yard operational in the future.

DVB planned to combine the necessary renovations with an extensive remodelling of the station. Among other things, a 64m x 145m roof spanning 16 railway tracks - a so-called "railway port" - was to be built. The roof was to be greened and fitted with a photovoltaic system. In the course of this, the underlying track systems had to be reorganised in order to create sufficient space for the wider railway carriages planned for the future. The track connections to the workshop hall also had to be renewed, as did the entire depot exit, where all the tracks come together and lead into the public traffic area. An additional track, including pre-installed switch connections for future expansion, was also planned to bypass the entire yard.
