The Berne Mittellauf project includes a number of smaller tunnelling projects as well as an almost 1,500 m long pipe section, which will be driven in six sections. The tunnelling sections have lengths of 150 m to 460 m and are being driven using an open shield with a roadheader and compressed air support. The machine was designed as a prototype solely for the project in close co-operation with Herrenknecht. The jacking pipes with an internal diameter of 3.8 m and an external diameter of 4.6 m are not only laid trenchlessly under roads and rails, but also cross the Berne river with a minimum overburden of approx. 5.0 m.
