A further Elbe crossing was required to provide additional district heating capacity in the north of Dresden. This was driven using an AVND machine with an outer diameter of 3.2 metres. The inner diameter of the jacking pipes is 2.4 metres and accommodates the actual district heating pipes, which can be walked on throughout their service life. The tunnelling was driven from a previously sunk lowering shaft under the Elbe into the target construction pit, which is also constructed as a caisson. The Elbe level was monitored during the entire construction period so that the entire construction site could be evacuated within 36 hours in the event of flooding.
