The International Garden Exhibition Ruhr Metropolis 2027 (IGA 2027) is already casting its shadow. The major garden festival will connect several exhibition sites via a sustainable cycle path network - and our civil engineering team at Eiffage Infra-Nordwest is actively involved. In Lünen, two new cycle path bridges are being built in this context, linking the south of the city directly with the city centre and creating sustainable added value for citizens. The bridges are part of the IGA cycle path, which will soon connect various future gardens in the Ruhr region. The vision: environmentally friendly, modern and attractive mobility - right through the centre of the Lippe wetlands.
A bridge construction that impresses
The bridge structure over the Lippe, which was pushed across the river segment by segment in a complex process, is particularly noteworthy. The bridge was built in six sections over a length of 97 metres and has now been successfully pushed onto the opposite bank. The abutments were previously founded deep on micropiles, the necessary earthworks for the reinforced concrete structures have been completed and the last steel components have been finalised at the ARGE partner's plant.
The second cycle path bridge crosses Kamener Straße - another highlight of the project. The 42 m long and 60 tonne structure was successfully lifted into place in May. With a span of 33 metres, the slightly curved steel structure floats elegantly above the road and blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.
Elegant design meets the art of engineering
Both bridges are real eye-catchers: the design comes from a team of Parisian architects who, together with an engineering firm from Hanover, developed a concept that is both functionally and visually impressive. The guiding principle:
The route should blend naturally into the surroundings and at the same time offer an attractive, safe and environmentally friendly crossing for cyclists and pedestrians. In particular, the one-sided structure of the Lippe Bridge ensures that visitors can get a good view of the International Garden Exhibition from a distance - a real highlight at the start of the IGA area.
A sustainable project for Lünen and the region
The bridges are not only technical masterpieces, but also a significant contribution to sustainable urban development. They create direct connections, promote cycling and pedestrian traffic and make an important contribution to the environmentally friendly transport concept of the IGA 2027. Our team at Eiffage Infra-Nordwest has done a great job on this project and once again demonstrates how the art of engineering and future-oriented mobility can go hand in hand.
