Renewal of railway overpass Schanzenstraße Hamburg

The renewal of the Schanzenstraße railway overpass (EÜ) from 1903 in Hamburg Altona, Sternschanze district, must be carried out. The bridge is reaching the end of its technical service life and needs to be replaced due to the high loads caused by train operations and its age of around 120 years. The shape and appearance of the bridge will remain largely unchanged. Only the supports in the road area will be removed.

The contract includes the following main construction services:

  • Construction of the bored piles and the sheet pile box under restricted height
  • Assembly of the superstructures on assembly scaffolding above road level
  • Driving in the superstructures with SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter)
  • Creation of the "Portuguese tile artwork" from individually designed tiles
  • Construction of 3 retaining walls with a total length of approx. 310 metres as sheet pile walls with head beams, mostly back-anchored

Special features of the project:

  • Construction of sheet piling between the foundations of the existing abutments and pendulum supports with limited height
  • Construction of the bored piles between the existing abutments and pendulum supports under restricted height (4.80 m)
  • The retaining walls are to be constructed between the track and the existing buildings. Distance only 2.80 m in places

The project will run for around 39 months from April 2024 to July 2027 with a contract value of EUR 21.7 million and will be realised by our Structural Engineering department.
