A contrasting programme to everyday office life: a tour of Germany's largest infrastructure project

The communications group of the Eiffage Infra-Bau Group took advantage of what was perhaps the last opportunity to visit the A3 motorway expansion project and gain exclusive insights into the special features of Germany's largest infrastructure project to date . On a construction site tour, we travelled around 50 kilometres of the expansion route and stopped off at the numerous impressive bridge structures, such as the Aurach Valley Bridge or one of the green bridges. We were particularly fascinated by the dimensions of this gigantic project and the enormous construction progress that is being made here every day.

The widening of the A3 motorway in detail:

  • Expansion between the Würzburg / Biebelried motorway junction and the Fürth / Erlangen motorway junction
  • Almost 80 km long construction section with almost 100 bridge structures
  • Ground-breaking ceremony in July 2020
  • Planned completion at the end of 2025

Special features of Germany's largest infrastructure project:

  • Fast construction can be realisedwhile traffic is still moving thanks to a high degree of prefabrication - this means, for example, the use of steel girders and semi-finished parts for overpass structures, which enable fast assembly during short breaks on days with less traffic; as well as the construction of the subway structures under one-way traffic guidance.
  • Numerous overpass and subway structures with column-free overpasses and "opening" subways to avoid a tunnelling effect when driving through
  • Green bridges with gabion walls on the sides as visual and glare protection for wildlife
  • Use of sustainable materials such as wooden slats for noise barriers → Use primarily in rural areas to create a homogeneous landscape.
  • Other noise barriers made of acrylic glass and numerous gabion walls
  • High-quality petrol stations and rest areas with numerous, spacious lorry parking spaces
